Architecture, Interior Design within the developer-provided building shell
The Calderwood Pavilion is the anchor tenant in a nine-story mixed-use building on Tremont Street in Boston’s historic South End. The larger facility includes restaurant, retail and residential spaces. The new facility is connected to the historic Cyclorama building, home of the Boston Center for the Arts (BCA), and is jointly shared by the Huntington Theatre Company (HTC) and the BCA.
Boston’s first new theatre venue in over 75 years opened to great fanfare and continues to thrill with grand productions alongside avant garde blackbox performances in the 372-seat Wimberly Theatre and 200-seat Roberts Studio Theatre. The new 38,000 SF complex has a three-story interior space that includes generous rehearsal rooms, box office, public lobbies and back of house functions. This is the HTC’s second performance venue and the additional space allows them to expand both creatively and physically. The theatres are given distinct identities within: The Robert’s Studio is designed with an unexpected red leather upholstered wall to represent the more experimental productions it houses; While the Wimberly is outfitted with more traditional wood paneling. Blue accents reference the soft blue lining that covers the wooden interior of a musical case.
A new events venue was designed within the performance facility to address the lack of event space in the neighborhood and to provide additional amenities for the mixed use development. This venue, Deanne Hall, is highly sought after for its excellent views, great location and performance feel.
Design solutions, including sliding and angling the main stairs, helped create a spacious feel in what might otherwise have been a tunnel to the interior lobby. This solution also provides additional room for patrons to enjoy drinks at the bar pre and post curtain.
Machado and Silvetti Associates and ADD Inc. designed the building’s exterior, and the mixed-use project condominium component.
